What is a USDA VS Permit?
- USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is the United States Department of Agriculture.
- The VS (Veterinary Services) department checks animal products for health and safety.
This permit certifies that animal-derived products entering the US do not pose a risk to human and animal health.
For Which Products?
Meat and Meat Products → Red meat, chicken, turkey, processed meats → USDA VS Permit required.
Milk and Milk Derivatives → Cheese, milk powder, whey protein, yogurt powder → USDA VS Permit required.
Eggs → Egg powder, foods and supplements containing egg protein → USDA VS Permit required.
Fish and Seafood → Fish oil capsules, dried fish products → USDA VS Permit required.
Collagen & Gelatin → Collagen powder of animal origin, gelatin-based products → USDA VS Permit required.
Pet Food (Dog/Cat Food) → All foods with animal protein, bone meal, meat/chicken/fish additives → USDA VS Permit required.
If your product is completely plant-based (e.g. nuts, vegetable powder, vegetable oils), no USDA VS Permit is required, only FDA registration is required.
Application Process
- Presentation of the Product Formulation: All ingredients are listed in detail.
- Production Facility Information, the facility's production procedures, and hygiene certificates are shared.
- VS Permit Application (Form VS-16-3) is submitted through the USDA online system.
- The approval process can take an average of 2 months.
